What to Wear for a Photo Session

Knowing what to wear for a photo session makes a big difference to the result. It is one of the questions I get most before a session. The short answer is to wear clothes you feel good in and that go well together. Here are a few practical tips.

Family photo session in Sintra

Colours that work together

You don’t need to match. Choose two or three shades from the same family, such as beige, blue, soft green or white, and spread them across the group. Neutral colours age better in photos than very bright ones, which also cast colour onto the skin.

Patterns and logos

Avoid very thin stripes, which can create a strange effect in the image, and clothes with large logos or slogans, which pull attention away. A small, subtle pattern works well if only one person wears it.

Think about the location

In Sintra there are dirt paths, steps and sand. Wear comfortable shoes and, if you like, bring another pair for the photos. On the coast it is often windy: light dresses add movement, but a jacket helps between shots. In the hills, fog can bring cold even in summer.

Children

Comfortable clothes that don’t bother them or make them feel restricted. Bring a change of clothes and a snack. A happy child does more for the session than any outfit.

Preparation

  • Iron your clothes the day before. Fabrics that don’t crease easily hold up better over an hour-long session.
  • Hair and make-up as usual, just a little more polished.
  • Avoid a haircut on the day itself: a few days before looks more natural.
  • If in doubt, send me a photo of your options before the session and I’ll tell you what I think.

What to wear for a photo session outdoors

When deciding what to wear for a photo session outdoors, think about the location: light tones and airy fabrics on the beach, earthy colours and soft greens in the woods, a little more contrast in the city. Avoid logos and very small patterns, which distract in photos.

Timing matters too. Check the sunset time in Lisbon and book the last hour of light, when colours look warmest. If you are still unsure what to wear for a photo session, send me photos of your options and we choose together.
