A surprise proposal takes some logistics, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. These are the steps I usually follow with people who contact me to photograph their proposal.

1. Choose the place
A place that means something to you both, or simply one that is beautiful and quiet at the right time. Sintra has many options, which I describe in the guide 7 places to propose in Sintra.
2. Choose the time
Late afternoon gives the nicest light. Check the sunset time for your chosen day and, if you can, pick a weekday, when there are fewer people.
3. A reason to be there
A walk, dinner nearby, a visit to friends. The more natural the excuse, the less suspicion.
4. Plan with the photographer
Before the day we agree on the exact spot, the clothes you will wear so I can recognise you, and a signal so I know it is about to happen. I arrive early and keep my distance, like a tourist with a camera.
5. The ring
Check the size and keep the ring in a pocket that closes. It sounds obvious, but near a cliff it is worth it.
6. After the yes
There is time for a short session together, once the nerves are gone. If you like, family or friends can be waiting nearby to celebrate.
