7 Places to Propose in Sintra

Sintra is one of the most popular places for a marriage proposal, and it’s easy to see why: in half an hour you go from the hills to the sea. I photograph proposals here often, and these are the places I usually suggest, with what is worth knowing about each one.

1. Azenhas do Mar

The village of white houses on the cliff is one of the most photogenic spots on the coast. The viewpoint by the road looks over the village and the natural pool, and in the late afternoon the light falls straight onto the houses. There are almost always people at the viewpoint, so it helps to pick a corner a little further away.

2. Cabo da Roca

The westernmost point of mainland Europe has high cliffs and the sea as far as you can see. There are many visitors by the lighthouse and the monument, but a few minutes’ walk along the trails gives you more privacy. It is usually windy, so bring a jacket.

3. Praia da Ursa

One of the most beautiful beaches on the coast, with large rocks standing in the sea. Access is down a steep dirt path, which calls for proper shoes and some care. For nature lovers, it is worth it.

4. Praia do Magoito

Dark sand, cliffs and a wide horizon for the sunset. It is less visited by tourists than other beaches in the area, which makes it easier to have the moment to yourselves.

5. Pena Park

The Pena gardens and the highest point of the hills, Cruz Alta, have views over the whole region. You need a ticket, opening hours are limited and the area around the palace gets busy during the day. The quieter corners of the park are a better choice.

6. Monserrate

The Monserrate gardens are calmer than Pena, with lawns, plants from several continents and the palace in the background. A good choice if you prefer a quiet setting.

7. Sintra’s historic centre

The narrow streets and viewpoints of the old town have a different, more urban feel. It works well for a proposal followed by dinner at a restaurant nearby.

Permits

In areas managed by Parques de Sintra, such as Pena, Monserrate or the Moorish Castle, professional photography needs prior authorisation, and drones and tripods are not allowed. Quinta da Regaleira has its own rules. The beaches, Azenhas do Mar and Cabo da Roca need no tickets, but they are public places with visitors, so privacy depends on the time of day.

Tips for the day

  • Time: late afternoon gives the nicest light. In summer the sun sets late and there are more people; in autumn and winter it is earlier and quieter.
  • Weather: Sintra has its own climate. The hills can be covered in fog while the coast is sunny, or the other way round. It is worth having a second spot in mind.
  • A signal: I arrive early and keep my distance. We agree on a gesture so I know when it is about to happen.
  • After the proposal: there is time for a short session together, once the nerves are gone.
