A photographic record of the Fez Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. The work focuses on the maze of streets, the light in the traditional markets and the medieval Islamic architecture.
About this series
I photographed the Medina on foot, without a set route. I was more interested in everyday life than in monuments: craftsmen at their workshop doors, spice and leather sellers, people carrying loads through the narrow streets.
Light is the biggest challenge. It comes through openings in the roofs and leaves patches of strong sun next to deep shade, so I often had to wait for someone to walk into the right spot.
It is the same way I work at weddings and events: pay attention and stay out of the way.
