Baptism Photography: How to Prepare the Day

A baptism goes by quickly: the ceremony is short and lunch with the family follows straight after. With some preparation, no important moment goes unphotographed.

Baptism photography

Talk to the parish

Every church has its own rules for photographers: where they can stand during the ceremony, whether flash is allowed or whether they can move near the altar. It is worth asking in advance. I work discreetly, without interrupting the priest.

Moments not to miss

  • The family and godparents arriving at the church.
  • The moment with the baptismal water.
  • The candle, the white gown and the small details.
  • The godparents with the baby.
  • The group photo as everyone leaves the church.
  • The party: the cake, the favours and the family at the table.

Group photos

Make a short list of the groups you want, such as parents, godparents, grandparents and extended family, and ask someone who knows everyone to help gather people. That way group photos take minutes, not half an hour.

The baby is in charge

Babies don’t follow schedules. Keep the bottle or dummy and a change of clothes close at hand. If the baby cries during the ceremony, that is fine: it is part of the story too.
