The Magic of a Family Session in Sintra: Smiles on the Grass and Lasting Memories
Some places seem made to hold stories, and Sintra is without doubt one of them. I recently had the privilege of photographing a wonderful family in one of the most peaceful corners of this mystical town. The setting? Pure nature, soft light and complete connection between the parents, two radiant children and their godparents, who brought even more warmth to the day.
As a family photographer, my goal is always the same: to capture the essence, not just the pose. And when the green expanse of Sintra is your studio, the result is almost always visual poetry.
The Power of Nature and the Comfort of the Grass
Many families ask me where the best place for a photo session is. Although a studio has its advantages, nothing beats the freedom nature offers, especially with children. For this session we chose moments of complete relaxation.
Sitting on the grass wasn’t just an aesthetic choice; it was a choice of comfort. When parents sit at their children’s level, the hierarchy disappears and play takes over. Children feel free to explore, touch the earth, run and, of course, snuggle into their parents’ and godparents’ laps. It is in these “guard down” moments that I capture the most genuine looks.
A Baby Who Lights Up the Scene
One of the highlights of this session was, without doubt, the family’s baby girl. Anyone who has tried photographing babies knows they direct the session: they set the pace. And what a wonderful pace she gave us! Between the shade of century-old trees and the soft touch of the greenery, her constant smile was the thread running through the whole story.
Watching a baby smile at the camera (or rather, smile at the life around her) while being cuddled by her godparents or rocked by her parents is a reminder of why I love what I do. Those are the smiles that, twenty years from now, will be the most precious treasure in that home.
The Role of Godparents: The Family We Choose
Including godparents in a family session is a trend I love. They are the supporting figures, the “parents of the heart”, and their presence adds an extra layer of protection and joy. In this Sintra session, the interaction between the godparents and the children was magical. We created memories that celebrate not only the immediate family but the whole network of love surrounding these children.

Sintra has a light of its own. Between the romantic mist and the sunbeams filtering through the treetops, every corner offers a natural frame. Whether in hidden gardens or open clearings, the town invites calm, and that calm shows in the photographs you can see in the gallery. There was no rush and no pressure, just a lovely afternoon among people who love each other.
